Back to Routine: Your Guide to Getting Back Into Fitness This Fall
There’s something about September that feels like a fresh start. The mornings get a little cooler, the kids are back at school, schedules start filling up again, and suddenly we’re looking at the calendar thinking, Okay… time to get back into a routine.
If your summer fitness routine looked a little different or maybe disappeared altogether, you are not alone. Summer is busy, routines change, vacations happen, kids are home and sometimes the best thing you can do is simply enjoy it (especially when our Airdrie summers go by so fast).
But now that fall is here, it’s the perfect time to find your rhythm again. Getting back into a fitness routine doesn’t have to mean going from zero to 100. You don’t need to spend hours at the gym, commit to working out seven days a week, or completely overhaul your life, You just need to start.
At Warehouse Spin & Fitness in Airdrie, we believe fitness should fit into your life, not the other way around. Our goal is to help you move your body, have fun, build strength and confidence and find a community that makes showing up something you actually look forward to.
So, whether you’re ready to jump back on the spin bike, try Pilates for the first time, get back into yoga or simply make movement a regular part of your week, here are a few tips to help you get back to your fall fitness routine.
1. Start Small and Build From There
One of the biggest mistakes people make when getting back into a fitness routine is trying to do everything at once.
Maybe you went from working out three or four times a week to barely moving during the summer. It can be tempting to think, Okay, Monday morning I’m going to work out every day, eat perfectly, drink all the water, get 10,000 steps, and completely turn things around!
We love the enthusiasm, but… maybe don’t.
Instead, start with two or three workouts per week. Give your body and your schedule a chance to adjust.
You might start with:
One spin class
One Pilates class
One strength, barre or yoga class
That’s it. Once that feels manageable, you can add more. The goal isn't to create the “perfect” fitness routine, the goal is to create a routine you can actually maintain.
2. Put Your Workouts on the Calendar
We schedule dentist appointments, kids’ activities, meetings, hair appointments and pretty much everything else. Your workout deserves a spot on the calendar, too. Choose the days and times that work for you and then book your classes for the week. Maybe Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. is your spin night, Thursday morning is Pilates & Sunday morning is yoga.
Once it’s in your calendar, it becomes an appointment with yourself. And remember: you don’t have to wait until you feel motivated to go, motivation is great, but consistency is what actually creates results.
Sometimes you’ll be excited to walk into the studio. Other times you’ll be tired, busy or wondering why you signed up for a 6:15 am class. Show up anyway, you might be surprised by how much better you feel when you leave.
3. Find Fitness You Actually Enjoy
Fitness shouldn't feel like punishment, if you absolutely hate running on a treadmill, don't. If lifting weights at a traditional gym isn't your thing, that's okay too, there are so many ways to move your body.
Maybe spin is your thing because you love the energy of riding to the beat of the music. Maybe you prefer the slower, controlled movements of Pilates. Maybe yoga helps you stretch, breathe and slow down. Maybe barre challenges muscles you didn't even know you had. Or maybe you love a little bit of everything.
That’s one of the things we love about group fitness at Warehouse Spin & Fitness, you can mix it up and find the classes that make you feel strong, energized and happy because the best workout is the one you actually want to come back to.
4. Don’t Forget About Strength
When people think about Warehouse Spin & Fitness, cardio often gets all the attention but strength training is an important part of a well-rounded fitness routine. Building strength can help you feel stronger in everyday life, from carrying groceries and picking up kids to climbing stairs and simply feeling more capable in your body and strength training doesn't necessarily mean spending an hour lifting weights at the gym.
Classes like barre, Pilates, Power Sculpt:AAA and Sexy Flexies can all challenge your muscles in different ways. You can build strength while still having fun and being part of a community.
5. Give Yourself Permission to Be a Beginner
Even if you've never taken a spin class or Pilates is completely new to you, please don't let that stop you from walking through the door. You don't need to be “fit enough” to join one of our classes. You don't need to know the choreography before your first spin class, you don't need to be flexible before trying yoga and you definitely don't need a six-pack to take Pilates.
You just need to show up.
At Warehouse Spin & Fitness, our classes are designed for real people with real lives and real bodies. You’ll see people at different fitness levels, and that's exactly how it should be. Our studio is a place to challenge yourself without comparing yourself to the person beside you. Your workout is yours.
6. Find Your People
One of the biggest benefits of group fitness is something you can't get from a home workout video or a treadmill in your basement: COMMUNITY!
There's something about walking into a room full of people who are there for the same reason. You sweat together, you laugh together (yes, you read that right, there is a lot of laughing in our classes), you complain about the playlist together, you celebrate the wins and eventually, the people you see at class become familiar faces and those familiar faces become friends.
For many of our members, coming to Warehouse isn't just about getting a workout in. It's about taking an hour for themselves, connecting with other people and leaving feeling better than when they walked in. And honestly? We think that's pretty important.
7. Don't Try to “Make Up” for Summer
Let's talk about something important: you don't need to earn your summer. You don't need to punish yourself for enjoying patio dinners, vacations, ice cream, cocktails, lazy mornings or a few weeks away from the gym. Your body didn't fail you because your routine changed. Life happened. Now, you’re simply moving into a new season. Instead of thinking, “I need to undo everything I did this summer,” try thinking:
“What does my body need from me this fall?”
Maybe it needs movement, maybe it needs strength, maybe it needs more sleep, maybe it needs stress relief or maybe it needs some time with people who make you laugh. Fitness is about so much more than calories burned or numbers on a scale, it's about feeling good in your body and creating habits that support the life you want to live.
8. Make Your Routine Realistic for Your Life
Fall can get busy - school schedules, work sports, kids activities, homework, grocery shopping, appointments, the list goes on and on. If you're a parent, you know how quickly your calendar can fill up, that's why your fitness routine needs to be realistic.
Maybe you don't have hours every day, that's okay. A 45-minute spin class counts. A Pilates class counts. A yoga class counts. A 30-minute workout counts. Going for a walk counts. Moving your body for 10 minutes counts. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that if you can't do a “perfect” workout, there's no point. Something is always better than nothing and over time, those small choices add up.
Your Fall Fitness Routine Doesn't Have to Be Perfect
If there's one thing we want you to remember this fall, it's this:
Consistency beats perfection.
You will miss a class, you'll have a crazy week, someone will get sick (kids back to school means back they are bringing home all the germs), work will run late, you'll sleep through your alarm. That's life.
Missing one workout doesn't mean you've fallen off the wagon. It means you're human. Just come back. The goal isn't to never miss a workout, it’s to make movement a regular part of your life so that when things get busy, you know how to find your way back. And that's exactly what a fall routine can give you.
A fresh start.
A little structure.
A reason to move.
A community to come back to.
